Amenorrhea is the absence of menstruation. Primary amenorrhea is a disorder that occurs when a women does not go through puberty, and thus, has never menstruated. Secondary amenorrhea is a disorder that occurs when a women stops getting her period. Amenorrhea is only considered to be normal before puberty, during a pregnancy, while breastfeeding after the birth of a child, and after menopause. Primary amenorrhea can be caused by a defect that prevents the ovaries and fallopian tubes from developing properly, chromosomal disorders, or disorders that are associated with hormonal abnormalities. Secondary amenorrhea is associated with hormonal abnormalities that can be caused by stress, excessive exercise, eating too much or not enough, Cushing’s syndrome; polycystic ovary syndrome, malfunction of the pituitary gland, hypothalamus, thyroid gland, or adrenal gland; or disorders in the reproductive tract. Some of the abnormalities listed above may be the result of autoimmune disorders, tumors, chemotherapy, hallucinogenic drug use or antidepressants.
